Sunrise or Sunset?

August 6, 2026

One of the questions I get asked the most is whether I recommend sunrise or sunset for sessions on Maui.

The simple answer is that it really depends on what you’re looking for.

Both are beautiful in their own way, and there isn’t one that’s objectively better than the other. Instead, I always encourage my clients to think about the kind of experience they want to have, because that’s what will ultimately shape your photos. Lighting and weather is always subject to change, but how you want your session to feel is entirely up to you.

Sunrise

There’s something really special about Maui early in the morning.

The beaches are quiet, everyone is just starting to wake up, and you often have the whole beach to yourselves. If you’re someone who values a slower, more intimate experience, sunrise might be the perfect fit.

The sky is pink, the tones are creamy, and there’s usually less wind.

Sunrise might be the right choice if you want a more private experience, have young kids who are happiest in the mornings, or if you haven’t yet adjusted to the time change and will be up anyways.

Sunset

Sunset sessions have a completely different feel.

The beaches are usually a bit busier, but the golden light is unmatched and it’s such a fun way to end the day. Sunset also tends to fit more naturally into a busy travel schedule.

Sunset might be the right choice if you prefer evenings over an early morning, are looking for a mixture of warm, golden light and soft pastel tones, or if you want your session to feel like a date night.

What Do I Recommend?

If your biggest priority is having a quiet beach and a slower, more intimate experience, I’d probably point you toward sunrise.

If you’d rather ease into your day and spend the evening together running around the beach & watching the sun go down, sunset is a wonderful choice.

At the end of the day, there really isn’t a wrong answer.
